It was given the name "Salina de la Santa Cruz" as its official foundation day was the Catholic day of the holy cross. Salina Cruz is situated near the mouth of the Río Tehuantepec, on the open coast of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec on the Gulf of Tehuantepec, and has no natural harbour. There was only a small Native village before Salina Cruz was chosen as the Pacific terminus of the Tehuantepec National Railway, whereupon a modern town was laid out and built on adjacent higher ground and an artificial harbour was built by the Mexican government to accommodate the expected traffic. The enclosed space is divided into an outer and inner harbour by a double line of quays wide enough to carry six great warehouses with electric cranes on both sides and a number of railway tracks.

Wilson's grevillea (Grevillea wilsonii), a small shrub with brilliant red flowers, thrives here in the jarrah forest, particularly after fire. Tucked away in various gullies along the hillside, from which streams feed into one of several dams in the Darling Range, are tall tree ferns. These introduced plants give a rainforest feel to the sometimes deep and mysterious gullies. The slopes above the falls are covered in spindly grevillea (Grevillea endlicheriana), which is restricted to the scarp between Bindoon and Serpentine. From July to November, it holds white flowers suspended about a metre above the main plant, on almost leafless stems. Coral vine (Kennedia coccinea), with its brilliant reddish-orange flowers, rambles over other plants of the jarrah forest. Granite outcrops support diverse and often unique plant communities. They act as water catchments for fire-sensitive "resurrection" plants, such as pincushions (Borya spp. ). These clumpy perennial herbs are prickly and produce white flowers between August and October.

Palolem receives rain from the southwest monsoon from June to August, and most places on the beach close down during this time (including the beach huts, which get dismantled). The tourist season kicks off in late October, and starts slowing down around March. The Beach Everyone, from long term travelers to package tourists, seems to have found an appropriate place for themselves on Palolem beach. As a result, there are completely different atmospheres from one end of the beach to the other.
